Mark Cuban challenges CEOs

Mark Cuban recently challenged other CEOs to find a top-performing company that does not have diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. Cuban has been a vocal defender of DEI initiatives, arguing they are an important business strategy rather than just an ideology. He believes implementing DEI programs allows companies to expand their candidate pool as widely as possible. This increases the chances of finding and hiring the most qualified person for the job. Other CEOs like Elon Musk and Bill Ackman have criticized DEI efforts.

Europe’s largest airline is getting into the landlord business

Europe's largest airline, Ryanair, is having trouble finding affordable housing for new employees in Dublin due to a severe housing crisis also rents in Dublin have doubled in the last decade. To address this issue, Ryanair recently purchased 25 homes in a new housing development near its Dublin headquarters.

It will rent to new cabin crew at affordable rates during their first year of employment. Some local politicians criticize this move, arguing it exacerbates the housing shortage, but Ryanair's CEO defended the purchase.

Google spent $2.1 billion to fire 12,000 employees and made a profit

Google is continuing layoffs and workforce restructuring, despite continuing revenue growth. In 2023, Google spent $2.1 billion on these efforts, which resulted in over 12,000 employees being cut from the company. The layoffs continued into 2024, with Google spending another $700 million while laying off additional workers.

Even as Google cut jobs on this scale, its revenues actually increased in 2024. Overall revenue for the company rose by 13% that year to reach $86 billion. However, Google is continuing with its cost-cutting approach of large layoffs as the economic outlook remains uncertain.
